A fasting blood sugar test measures the amount of sugar in your blood after you haven’t eaten for at least eight hours. It’s a screening test for diabetes. 

Normal fasting blood sugar level 

  • A fasting blood sugar level of 70–99 mg/dL (3.9–5.5 mmol/L) is considered normal

Abnormal fasting blood sugar levels 

    • A fasting blood sugar level of 100–125 mg/dL (5.6–6.9 mmol/L) is considered prediabetes
  • A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher on two separate tests is considered diabetes

How to prepare 

  • Don’t eat or drink anything (except water) for 8 to 12 hours
  • Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions about how long to fast
Why it’s important
  • Fasting blood sugar levels help determine whether you have diabetes or how you’re managing your diabetes 
  • High fasting blood sugar levels indicate that you are more likely to have issues with insulin production

  • Blood glucose measured by a blood test from a vein is considered more accurate than blood glucose measured from a fingerstick
  • Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories
