Usage: | Carcinoid are neuroectodermal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas. Carcinoid tumors are traditionally classified into foregut Carcinoids, midgut Carcinoids and hindgut Carcinoids. The clinical manifestation of Carcinoid tumors are extremely varied and often obscure. These variable presentations often lead to delay in correct diagnosis. Midgut Carcinoids release large quantity of Serotonin (5-Hydroxytryptamin; 5-HT) into circulation. However tumors derived from foregut primarily secrete 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and Histamin. Primary hindgut Carcinoids show no 5-HT or 5-HTP secretory activity. In contrast, Chromogranin A levels are elevated in almost all hindgut tumors. |
